Upstate University Hospital required a canopy in front of the main emergency department entrance, which is tucked behind a concrete retaining wall on an uphill, one-way street. This location makes the ED entrance difficult to find, so the canopy acts as a wayfinding tool alerting drivers to the entrance.
In the winter months, ice occasionally falls off the building above onto the sidewalk below, the canopy serves to protect pedestrians and parked ambulances. The total scope of work included the canopy, complete repaving of the parking area, and underground utility work. The canopy also affords protection from the elements, vehicle exhaust extraction, adequate lighting and a shower area for outdoor patient decontamination
