URMC Third Floor Realignment – Phase 1

Research groups within the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester Medical Center were scattered around different wings of the facility. With these groups expanding and space being at a premium, it was time to reorganize. Leadership’s desire was to break down the “silos” in which the separate groups operated to consolidate shared items and improve the efficiency of underutilized space.

MRB Group provided architecture and interior design for the renovation of the third floor of the 5100 and 8100 wings of the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Our team encountered several challenges during construction:

• Adjacent floors and wings were occupied during construction
• Clay tile (a difficult construction material to work with) was present in one wing of the project
• Laboratory casework package was rebid during construction, requiring a redesign
• New HVAC through floors that were not part of scope

The project included a complete gutting of two wings, consisting of 1940’s construction, to provide an entirely new layout of modern laboratories and office space. This project will unify disparate lab groups into a shared lab space and consolidate equipment usage.
