The Carriage House – Fort William Henry

Construction of the Carriage House dates back to the late 1800’s and is the oldest building on the Fort William Henry Campus. The building was originally constructed as a servants’ quarters and to house the horses and carriages of patrons of the original Fort William Henry Hotel. Later, the building served to house automobiles when the preferred mode of transportation had shifted. The building remained largely unchanged for decades and in latter years has been used as an event space for concerts, plays and wedding receptions.

To capitalize on the resort siting at the southern tip of Lake George and it’s reputation as a destination resort, Fort William Henry was looking to transform the Carriage House
into a first class wedding reception and event venue. New window and door openings were cut in to the envelope taking advantage of the breathtaking views of the surrounding lake
and mountains. The interior was completely gutted and renovated to provide accessibility, new toilet rooms, catering kitchen, lighting and finishes as well as a grand fireplace. The mezzanine level was expanded to include additional seating and a bride’s room.

The exterior received a face-lift, replacing much of the cedar shake siding, removing abandoned mechanical equipment and replacing or restoring original windows. A deck and patio were added to extend event activities and seating to the exterior. An outdoor fireplace, landscaping, accent lighting and garden walls were included to anchor the western end of the resort lawn.

The renovation project transformed the Carriage House structure into a modern and elegant venue while maintaining the original character and charm of the design.

Big Idea

To breathe new life into a 19th-century Carriage House by blending thoughtful restoration with contemporary amenities that support memorable gatherings in a world-class resort setting.
