RIT College of Health Sciences & Technology
The Rochester Institute of Technology required more space to accommodate the growing College of Health Sciences and Technology. The project consisted of approximately 30,000 sf of existing space to be revitalized with an additional 15,000 sf of new space. The addition provides a new identity for CHST on the north edge of the campus.
The building houses state-of-the art lecture rooms, clinical-office simulation spaces, high-tech critical care simulation and clinical research space for the college. The new facility also includes a primary care clinic space and psychology clinic on the first level.
A portion of the renovated space was in an existing two story high bay (that used to hold a large printing press). A floor was added to create much-needed program space. Openings in the floor along with a large atrium space were created to allow visual connections between levels.
The existing block veneer building was clad with a new brick and glass skin extending around the new addition to give the college a playful and light-filled façade. A large ‘scoop’ feature at the entry gives the college the identity piece requested as a primary goal at project kick-off.
Big Idea
A consolidation of RIT’s various health-related programs under one roof in an adaptive re-use of current space and addition of new space.
