Egypt Road Slope Stabilization & Road Reconstruction
MRB Group routinely works with communities operating under the constraints of budget concerns, and understands the implications this has on what work can be completed. The Town of Bristol needed to address the deterioration of a section of Egypt Rd, a steep section of sloped territory where years of erosion and storm runoff had finally caused total edge failure of the existing roadway- a significant safety hazard to motorists.
MRB Group recognized that eliminating the need for specialized contractors could significantly reduce project expenses and approached design with this in mind, proposing a Gabion Basket Wall approach to slope stabilization. The Town’s Highway Department staff was able to begin, manage, and complete construction on their schedule with minimal additional expenditure.
Providing this stabilization also allowed the MRB team to redesign this section of the roadway, which would further aid in promoting drainage through superelevation. Revising the horizontal alignment of the road and the superelevation of the banks greatly decreased the angle of the slope below the grade of the road, creating a much safer environment that promotes runoff and erosion control, decreases water damage, and provides safer conditions for motorists in any weather condition.
The project was funded in part by a NYS DEC Water Quality Improvement Program (WQIP) grant that provides project funding as reimbursement funds up to 75% of a project’s full cost, with a 25% match of funds from the municipality. MRB Group assisted the Town and Ontario County in preparing this grant application.
