Certified Planner, Floodplain Manager and Design Professional Jane Nicholson has joined MRB Group Engineering, Architecture and Surveying, DPC.  MRB Group President Ryan Colvin announced that Nicholson will serve as a Senior Planner and be part of the firm’s fast-growing SmarterLocalGov team.

“Unlike any other engineering firm in Upstate New York, MRB Group has been developing a new kind of planning team – one that’s entirely focused on local government operations, strategic planning, and economic development,” stated Colvin.

“It’s a new municipal services division at MRB Group called SmarterLocalGov,” he said, “and Jane is an integral part of its growth.”

According to Colvin, the traditional focus of urban planning on land use and density is still relevant, but only answers a portion of the needs of 21st century municipal leaders.

“We’ve been working with local governments for 92 years,” Colvin said.  “Our services have evolved in direct parallel with the needs of our clients.  SmarterLocalGov was created to strengthen communities at a time when many are struggling.  Jane’s expertise is a perfect combination of analysis, engagement, design, and implementation.  Her hands-on experience as a Planning Director and Zoning Officer directly translates into understanding what works in practice in today’s municipal environment,” Colvin stated.

“We’re excited that Jane will help drive the continued development of the SmarterLocalGov team – increasing the ways we can help local governments accomplish more for their communities,” Colvin said.

Nicholson is a graduate of Syracuse University and SUNY ESF with both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees.  She earned her Master of Public Administration degree from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University, and also earned a Master of Urban + Environmental Planning degree from the University of Virginia.

She has served in a number of planning-related roles at the state and local government levels, including her most recent assignment to the NYS Office of General Services, where she served under two consecutive contracts, providing oversight of environmental permitting and regulatory compliance for NYS Agency clients and projects including the Adirondack Rail Trail and the NYS Artificial Reef Program.

“Jane is an accomplished leader, presenter, and planning professional,” said Matt Horn, Director of MRB Group’s SmarterLocalGov team.  “Her design portfolio is impressive, and her practical experience means she will be an immediate asset to municipal officials and planners.  She can help communities translate visionary thinking into practical application.  Her hands-on experience will help create strategic plans that are grounded in research, data – and feasibility.  In short, she’ll help community leaders get things done!”

“MRB Group’s SmarterLocalGov team helps communities utilize effective, practical strategic planning so they can be proactive and create their own success story,” Colvin added.  “Jane will be instrumental in connecting leaders to all the resources we’ve developed, tools and guidance based on the collective experience of our team members, and decades of experience with the hundreds of municipal and public entities we serve,” he said.

MRB Group has worked with municipal, commercial and public entities since 1927, providing engineering, architecture, development and planning and services to support and strengthen local governments.  The firm currently serves more than 150 communities, assisting with day-to-day operations like water and wastewater treatment, public works services, architecture for maintenance and rehabilitation of public facilities, and support for municipal operations including strategic planning, planning board services, and economic development.
