During the 1960s, the growing firm underwent several name changes reflecting new leadership and continued expansion, transitioning from Meloy Smith Consulting Engineer & Surveyor to Smith & Hershey Engineers & Surveyors. In 1969, Anthony Malone became a partner, and the firm was renamed Hershey, Malone & Associates Consulting Engineers, marking another important milestone in the firm’s growth and evolution.
In the 1960s, Kenneth Hershey interviewed Anthony Malone and offered him a position with the firm. Anthony Malone became the company’s fourth employee.
Kenneth Hershey’s leadership and technical expertise quickly became instrumental to the firm’s continued success and expansion. In 1961, Meloy Smith offered Kenneth Hershey a partnership, officially forming Smith & Hershey Consulting Engineers and Surveyors.
As the firm continued to grow, Meloy Smith hired Kenneth Hershey, who became the third employee in the young company.
Meloy Smith worked closely with suburban communities surrounding Rochester, providing essential “Sanitary Engineering” services that supported public health, water systems, and community growth.
During the 1930s and 1940s, only a handful of engineering and surveying firms served the Rochester region, positioning the firm as an early leader in municipal infrastructure and community development.
In 1927, Meloy Smith founded a consulting engineering and surveying firm in Rochester, New York, laying the foundation for what would become MRB Group.
